The African Diaspora was commemorating the world reknowed artist and Cameroonian musician Manu Dibango this Tuesday June 22, 2021.
The ceremony held at the Eglise de la Madeleine in Paris 8th District, was organized under the high patronage of His Excellency H.E Andre Magnus Ekoumou Cameroon’s ambassador to France, representing the President of Cameroon was very moving. The Icon Manu Dibango had been swept away by Covid-19 1 year earlier, on March 24, 2020.
An inter-religious ceremony with an Imam, a Pastor and a Priest was held with the emotion was palpable when the choirs sang one of his hit songs « sangho Yesus Christo » meaning our father jesus christ, drawing tears to family and friends and some 1000 people from the diaspora, who came to pay a tribute to « Grand Manu » as called by Cameroonians with affection. Among the distinguish guests, the Secretary general of La Francophonie Louise Mushikiwabo, and Arnaud Ngatcha,Deputy Mayor in charge of international relations and francophonie representing the Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo
» We were all emotional, this tribute to Manu Dibango, this immense artist that Paris loves. I am very happy today on behalf of the mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo, to have been able to pay tribute to him on behalf of the city of Paris » _ said Arnaud Ngatcha, Paris’s Deputy Mayor of International Relations and Francophonie.
The ceremony was very festive despite the sadness. « There was both emotion and joy; people were singing because Manu would have loved it. He was a very happy person » said a guest. During the keynote address, S.E.M. André Magnus Ekoumou, Cameroon’s Ambassador to France, stressed the importance of recognizing Manu Dibango, an artist who served his country with patriotism, love and devotion.
» All cameroonians are celebrating Manu Dibango at the moment, and the President of Cameroon would like the diaspora to be as authentic as the patriarch Manu was. » added H.E ambassador Andre Magnus Ekounou.

« Tonton Manu » was posthumously elevated to the rank of « Grand Cordon » of Cameroonian merit by the Cameroon Head of State through his representative Ambassador Andre Magnus Ekounou.
Emmanuel « Manu » Dibango was born in Douala, Cameroon in 1933. His father, Michel Manfred N’Djoké Dibango, was a civil servant, and his mother was a fashion designer, running her own small business. He was a member of the seminal Congolese rumba group African Jazz and has collaborated with many other musicians, including Fania All Stars, Fela Kuti, Herbie Hancock, King Sunny Adé, Don Cherry, and Sly and Robbie. He achieved a considerable following in the UK with a disco hit called « Big Blow », originally released in 1976 and re-mixed as a 12″ single in 1978 on Island Records. In 1998, he recorded the album CubAfrica with Cuban artist Eliades Ochoa. At the 16th Annual Grammy Awards in 1974, he was nominated in the categories Best R&B Instrumental Performance and Best Instrumental Composition for « Soul Makossa ».[1
The song « Soul Makossa » on the record of the same name contains the lyrics « makossa », which means « (I) dance » in his native tongue, the Cameroonian language Duala. It has influenced popular music hits, including Kool and the Gang’s « Jungle Boogie ». On 24 March 2020, Dibango died from COVID-19 in Melun near Paris. May his soul « makossa » rest in Peace.

Dans le cadre de nos activités de representation de marques, nous nous rendons au 4 coins du monde pour rencontrer nos partenaires, et découvrir les nouvelles tendances du Luxe, de la Mode et des Arts. Voici notre dernier coup de coeur, à Paris.
Nous avons visité cette magnifique exposition à la Monnaie de Paris du 19 au 27 fevrier 2019 et soutenu l’initiative ayant pour but de financer les programmes dédiés à l’égalité des sexes et l’autonomisation des femmes.
L’exposition intitulée «Artistes à la Une, Togeth’Her » organisée par « Artistes a la une » et Vogue, présente 33 toiles imaginées par des artistes contemporains du monde entier, rendant hommage à des femmes inspirantes à leurs yeux sur une couverture vierge de Vogue. 31 femmes d’exception du monde des Lettres et de la Politique, Artistes, Stars de cinéma y sont représentées: Simone de Beauvoir, Marguerite Duras, Margareth Tatcher, Michèle Obama, Joséphine Baker, Elizabeth Taylor, Madona, Frida Khalo se cotoient dans des tableaux imaginés par les artistes.
Ce projet conçu par le curateur David-Hervé Boutin (agence BB+) Co-curatrice : Lucia Pesapane (Monnaie de Paris), fait partie des priorités du programme artistique de la Monnaie de Paris impulsé par sa directrice Camille Morineau qui est aussi la Présidente de AWARE (Archives of Women Artists Research Exhibitions) dont le but est de soutenir et rendre visible la création des artistes femmes à travers des expositions et des événements.

Joséphine Baker naît à Saint-Louis dans le Missouri. Son enfance douloureuse dans une ville marquée par les ségrégations raciales sera le point de départ d’un combat pour la vie. Parisienne dès 1925, elle devient célèbre grâce au spectacle La Revue Nègre où elle danse sur un rythme de charleston. Divorcée quatre fois, bisexuelle et militante, elle devient une figure de la résistance durant l’occupation nazie. Elle continue par la suite à s’engager, au côté du Mouvement des droits civiques de Martin Luther King notamment – Simone de Beauvoir est une intellectuelle française et figure majeure du féminisme du XXème siècle. Son ouvrage Le Deuxième Sexe (1949) est le point de départ de l’analyse du genre comme construction sociale, distincte du sexe biologique. Elle est l’une des signataires du Manifeste des 121 (1960) déclarant le « droit à l’insoumission dans la guerre d’Algérie », puis rédige le Manifeste des 343 (1971), en faveur de la légalisation de l’avortement. Monnaie de Paris hosted from February 19th to 27th, 2019, an exhibition called « Artistes à la Une, Togeth’her » to support programs promoting gender equality and women empowerment, spearheaded by NATO Women.
The exhibition entitled « Artists a la Une, Togeth’Her » is a tribute to inspiring women on a virgin cover of Vogue. Organized by « artists a la une » and the Vogue magazine, the exhibition presents 33 paintings imagined by contemporary artists from all over the world, representing 31 exceptional women, renowned writers, politicians, artists, and movie stars: Simone de Beauvoir, Marguerite Duras, Margareth Thatcher, Michèle Obama, Josephine Baker, Elizabeth Taylor, Madona, Frida Khalo live together in paintings created by those talented the artists.
This project designed by curator David-Herve Boutin (BB+ agency) and Co-curator Lucia Pesapane (Monnaie de Paris), is part of one of the strongest priorities of Monnaie de Paris artistic program, driven by its director Camille Morineau who is also president of AWARE (Archive of Women Artists Research and Exhibition ), whose aim is to support and enlight the creation of women artists through exhibitions and events.
Art for Gender Equality and Women Empowerment.
The artworks will be sold at auction by the prestigious Christie’s house, for the benefit of the NATO France Committee. Vogue magazine has planned to create an official catalog of all these artworks, but you can already order your lithography here.

Josephine Baker was born in St. Louis, Missouri. His painful childhood in a city marked by racial segregation will be the starting point for a fight for life. Parisian from 1925, she became famous thanks to the show La Revue Negro where she dances on a rhythm of Charleston. Divorced four times, bisexual and militant, she became a figure of resistance during the Nazi occupation. She continued to engage, alongside the civil rights movement of Martin Luther King notably _ Simone de Beauvoir was a French intellectual and major figure of the 20th century feminism. Her book « Le deuxieme Sexe » (1949) is the starting point for gender analysis as a social construct, distinct from biological sex. She is one of the signatories of the Manifesto of 121 (1960) declaring the « right to Insubmission in the war of Algeria » and then writes the Manifesto of 343 (1971), in favor of the legalisation of abortion.
